In his new book, published by I. Sideris Publications, veteran diplomat, and Balkan affairs expert Alexandros Mallias - former Ambassador of Greece to Washington, Tirana, and Skopje - analyzes the troubled developments in Greece’s relations with neighboring Albania
Prompted by the "Beleri Case", the writings of Ambassador ad honorem and honorary citizen of Himarra, Alexandros Mallias, highlight the absence of the rule of law in Albania — a reality that, among other consequences, has led to the mass exodus of the country's youth and the subjugation of institutions and justice to political expediencies. Despite Albania’s inherent weaknesses, systemic corruption, and the imbalance of power between the two neighboring countries, the policies of Albanian leadership toward Greece are marked by consistency, continuity, and a clear strategic goal. In contrast, the long-standing stance of Athens, often summarized by the phrase “let’s turn the page,” reflects a lack of accurate assessment of intentions, developments, and Tirana’s objectives.
Crucial to understanding the context and the persecution of Himarriot MEP Fredi Beleri by the Albanian authorities—as well as to shaping Greece’s stance and response—are the introductory note by Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou, the foreword by Professor and MP for Athens Angelos Syrigos, and of course, the contributions by MEP Fredi Beleri himself.
