Meli and Melek

Children's Event

Hellenic American Union Library

Author Vana Mavridou tells a moving story about the Asia Minor Disaster

On the publication of her new book, Meli and Melek, the Hellenic American Union is inviting the author to a  meeting with young booklovers.

At the event, Vana Mavridou will tell the story of little Meli, a girl who loves her doll, Melek, and always keeps her close. However, in September 1922, Meli will learn to live without Melek, away from her home and her loved ones. One hundred years after the Asia Minor Disaster, the book Meli and Melek presents the historical background and events of that period through the eyes of a young child. Above all, it gives us the opportunity to talk to children about friendship, cooperation, respect for each other’s personality and wishes, but also about fear, anxiety, and the terrible experience of loss.

The event will be held at the Library of the Hellenic American Union and is aimed at children aged 8 or older.

The book is illustrated by Renia Metallinou and is available from Dioptra Publications.
